This renovation of a top storey penthouse apartment takes diverse cues to create a tactile and warm interior. Our initial response was to use the textured materials and muted colours of the surrounding estuary as inspiration. Black blue house bricks give a structured and architectural foundation to the space whilst bringing in some of the tones present in the water into the space. The timber lined walls were inspired by chalets and the warm feeling of enclosure they bring even when looking out across inclement weather. Copper counters and heavy timber doors recall the interiors of old fishing boats that still come in and out of the local harbour everyday. The aim was to create an interior that felt poetic, a romantic interpretation of the kinds of events and environments that surround this apartment.
The doorway between the hall and the living room was widened to make for a more dramatic entry. Two wooden pillars mark this entry that fold out on to a Credenza unit providing extra low level storage in the living room. A concrete fire surround further echoes the exterior and is topped by a cupboard, neatly concealing the TV behind bi-fold doors. The kitchen continues this aesthetic but this time with a copper counter that provides a hard-wearing surface that patinates easily providing a beautiful effect that evolves over time.
The Master bedroom is completely reconfigured to give a lot more wardrobe space whilst still providing ample space around the bed. A wooden partition behind the bed provides a level of separation between the wardrobe and the main bedroom and also provides a focal point as you enter the room. Whilst we have continued the brick pavers into the room we have introduced thick woollen area rugs and plush fabrics to soften the space.
The bathrooms continue the interplay between industrial and domestic materials. Marble, mosaic walls and hand blown glass lights provide luxurious touch points throughout the space. The vanities are built around timber frames and integrate ample storage and movable mirrors within to provide beautiful, yet practical cabinets.
